Water Resource Usage

The Institute’s primary water consumption categories include domestic water, process water, and irrigation, with domestic water accounting for 68.93%. All water is sourced from the Taiwan Water Corporation. According to the World Resources Institute’s Aqueduct Water Risk Atlas, the Institute’s operational sites are located in regions classified as “Low–Medium (1–2)” for overall water stress and “Low (0–1)” for water depletion. None of the major sites are situated in areas of high water stress, and water withdrawals have not posed significant impacts on local water resources. The river flood risk is assessed as “Low–Medium Risk (1–2),” which currently does not affect campus operations. Furthermore, the Institute continues to implement “smart water network management” and “AI-assisted leakage detection technologies,” effectively reducing leakage rates to 5%, while enhancing reclaimed water utilization and enabling flexible allocation of water resources.

Notes:

  1. The table covers the ITRI Headquarters, Kuang-Fu Campus, ITRI Southern Region Campus, ITRI Central Region Campus, Southern Taiwan Innovation & Research Park, Shalun Green Energy Technology Demonstration Site, and the Taipei Branch.
  2. All water used by the Institute is sourced exclusively from the Taiwan Water Corporation, classified as freshwater (≤1,000 mg/L total dissolved solids), with no groundwater extraction or alternative water sources utilized.
  3. The 2020 calculations of water discharge and consumption exclude the Shalun Green Energy Technology Demonstration Site and the Taipei Branch, while the 2022–2024 calculations exclude the Taipei Branch.

ITRI’s Water Restriction Measures in Response to Water Restrictions by Water Resources Agency

1

Wastewater and Sewage Treatment

In response to increasing global environmental awareness, ITRI continues to strengthen wastewater management. In 2024, the "Wastewater Discharge Management Procedure" was revised to clarify responsibilities across units and raise employee environmental awareness. Laboratory wastewater is required to meet entry-limit standards to prevent high-concentration effluents from impacting treatment systems and reduce environmental risks. Water quality monitoring equipment is installed at all campuses to track real-time data and adjust management strategies, ensuring that all discharged water complies with regulations. In 2024, no exceedance events occurred, demonstrating the Institute’s effective control and commitment to sustainability.

Dormitory Sewage Reuse at ITRI Headquarters

To make the most of every drop of water and improve water-use efficiency, the Institute has established a project team focusing on source segregation and wastewater recycling. The team has developed short-, medium-, and long-term wastewater reduction targets for ITRI Headquarters, promoting the planning and implementation of wastewater reduction initiatives. Simultaneously, digital wastewater discharge management technologies have been introduced, enabling the reuse of recycled water for applications such as system cooling, thereby advancing circular water resource management.
